Deaf Horizons

This day program, run as a psychosocial clubhouse, offers a multitude of activities for deaf adults who have mental illness or who are economically or educationally disadvantaged. Participants learn pre-vocational skills in food service, housekeeping, and clerical work that help prepare them for future jobs in the community. The Job Club trains members on writing resumes and how to prepare for interviews. Members regularly meet with program specialists to create meaningful goals as a way to ensure they get the most out of their time at Deaf Horizons.

Social activities include day trips to special events, holiday celebrations, and captioned movies. The building housing Deaf Horizons is named after Wilson Grabill, an original founder of the National Health Care Foundation for the Deaf (now known as Deaf-REACH).

Funding:   Funds for support of the day programs come from the Rehabilitation Services Administration, Bureau of Community Services, Commission on Mental Health Services, D.C. Center for Independent Living, sales, fees, gifts, and donations.

Hours: 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Independent Living Skills Program

The Independent Living Skills program serves deaf adults who are developmentally delayed and require supervision in virtually all areas of their lives. The main focus in this day program is on vocational training, which enables members to develop basic work skills in collating, labeling, folding, and other bulk mailing tasks through participation in sheltered workshops. Work is contracted for fees from which members are paid. When not engaged in sheltered workshop tasks, members work one-on-one with staff on individual goals such as learning one's name in sign language and how to write one's address.

Members who participate in this program also enjoy social outings. Trips to the library, museums, bowling, and restaurants are highly popular activities.
